Resting below are a mixture of memory foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress includes better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid beds.

Even though it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there is no hug or significant shaping to the bed. If you’re looking to sink into a mattress, then proceed from the DreamCloud.

Construction Dream Cloud Pintuck Comforter

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud Pintuck Comforter

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

Now I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the general firmness level of this mattress, I invited three other individuals to present their view too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just describing the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dream Cloud Pintuck Comforter

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of men and women want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Pintuck Comforter

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
