Construction Problems With Dreamcloud Mattress
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Problems With Dreamcloud Mattress
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the general firmness level of this mattress, I invited three additional individuals to present their opinion too. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Rather than just describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to find out what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Problems With Dreamcloud Mattress
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.
When buying a new bed, the majority of people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Problems With Dreamcloud Mattress
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I’m particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
