Construction Dreamcloud vs Tuft And Needle Mint

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Tuft And Needle Mint

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I want to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three other people to present their opinion as well. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is really firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply describing the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to find out what it will feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud vs Tuft And Needle Mint

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new bed, the majority of people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Tuft And Needle Mint

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will provide.

I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
