Construction Unpacking A Dreamcloud Mattress
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Unpacking A Dreamcloud Mattress
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of these three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other individuals to present their opinion as well. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this bed is pretty firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Rather than simply explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Unpacking A Dreamcloud Mattress
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.
When purchasing a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Unpacking A Dreamcloud Mattress
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
