Because it’s a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets many of our criteria for what a quality bed must have. With eight unique layers of support and comfort, the DreamCloud uses all of the proper materials in its construction. Sleep Number Bed vs Dreamcloud
From the tufted cashmere cover that gives great airflow, to the gel memory foam in the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to promote a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mix of polyurethane foam and latex layers, meaning this bed contains better quality relaxation materials than most other hybrid mattresses.
Despite the fact that it uses multiple memory foam layers, there is no hug or significant shaping to the bed. If you are looking to sink into a mattress, then move on from the DreamCloud.
A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, especially for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Sleep Number Bed vs Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Sleep Number Bed vs Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of the three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I want to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their view as well. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is really firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than just describing the feel of the mattress for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Sleep Number Bed vs Dreamcloud
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.
When buying a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Sleep Number Bed vs Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will provide.
I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
