Construction Where Are Dreamcloud Mattresses Manufactured?

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Where Are Dreamcloud Mattresses Manufactured?

construction

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

dream cloud firmness

At this point I’d like to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to present their opinion too. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.

firmness test

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply explaining the feel of this mattress for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Where Are Dreamcloud Mattresses Manufactured?

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Where Are Dreamcloud Mattresses Manufactured?

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.

To do so, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Where Are Dreamcloud Mattresses Manufactured

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.

Even though you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
