Construction Dreamcloud Mattress Without Box Spring

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Mattress Without Box Spring

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I’d like to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three additional people to present their opinion as well. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of this mattress to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to know what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud Mattress Without Box Spring

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattress Without Box Spring

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
