From the tufted cashmere cover that gives great airflow, to the gel memory foam in the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Resting below are a mix of polyurethane foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress contains better quality relaxation materials than most other hybrid mattresses.

Even though it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there’s not any hug or significant shaping to the bed. If you’re searching to sink into a mattress, then move on from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, especially for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Dream Cloud vs Puffy Lux

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud vs Puffy Lux

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

Now I want to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to give their view as well. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Dream Cloud vs Puffy Lux

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new bed, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud vs Puffy Lux

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will provide.

I’m especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
