Construction Windbed vs Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Windbed vs Dreamcloud

construction

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

Now I’d like to note that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I invited three additional people to give their opinion too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.

firmness test

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just describing the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Windbed vs Dreamcloud

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Windbed vs Dreamcloud

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will provide.

I’m especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
