Construction Why Is Dreamcloud So Tall
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Why Is Dreamcloud So Tall
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
At this point I want to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other people to present their view as well. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
As opposed to just explaining the feel of the mattress to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to find out what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Why Is Dreamcloud So Tall
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
While purchasing a new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Why Is Dreamcloud So Tall
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
