Construction Why Does My New Dreamcloud Mattress Smell So Bad

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Why Does My New Dreamcloud Mattress Smell So Bad

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their view too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this bed is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Why Does My New Dreamcloud Mattress Smell So Bad

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Why Does My New Dreamcloud Mattress Smell So Bad

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.

I’m especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
