Construction Who Makes The Dreamcloud Mattress

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Who Makes The Dreamcloud Mattress

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

At this point I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other people to give their opinion as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Who Makes The Dreamcloud Mattress

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new bed, the majority of people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Who Makes The Dreamcloud Mattress

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.

I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
