Construction Who Makes The Dream Cloud Mattress
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Who Makes The Dream Cloud Mattress
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other people to present their opinion as well. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than simply explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Who Makes The Dream Cloud Mattress
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.
While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Who Makes The Dream Cloud Mattress
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
