Because it’s a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets a number of our standards for what a excellent mattress should provide. With eight unique layers of comfort and support, the DreamCloud utilizes all the proper materials in its construction. Who Makes Dreamcloud
From the tufted cashmere cover that provides good airflow, to the gel memory foam in the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud is designed to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mix of polyurethane foam and latex layers, meaning this bed includes better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid beds.

Despite the fact that it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there is no hug or significant contouring to the mattress. If you are searching to sink into a mattress, then move on from the DreamCloud.

Construction Who Makes Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Who Makes Dreamcloud

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of the three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

At this point I want to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three additional people to give their opinion as well. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this mattress is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just explaining the feel of this mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my back, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Who Makes Dreamcloud

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Who Makes Dreamcloud

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will give you.

I’m especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
