Construction Who Makes Dream Cloud
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Who Makes Dream Cloud
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three other individuals to present their view as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this bed is pretty firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
As opposed to simply explaining the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Who Makes Dream Cloud
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.
While purchasing a new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Who Makes Dream Cloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
