Construction Where Is The Dreamcloud Mattress Made
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Where Is The Dreamcloud Mattress Made
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of these three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
Now I want to note that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three additional people to give their view as well. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Where Is The Dreamcloud Mattress Made
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
When buying a new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Where Is The Dreamcloud Mattress Made
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
