Construction Where Are Dream Cloud Mattresses Made
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Where Are Dream Cloud Mattresses Made
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of these three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the general firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other individuals to present their view as well. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Rather than just describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Where Are Dream Cloud Mattresses Made
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.
While buying a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Where Are Dream Cloud Mattresses Made
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
