Construction What Type Of Foam Is Used In The Dreamcloud Mattress

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. What Type Of Foam Is Used In The Dreamcloud Mattress

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

At this point I want to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I invited three additional individuals to give their view as well. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of this mattress to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to know what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from another. What Type Of Foam Is Used In The Dreamcloud Mattress

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. What Type Of Foam Is Used In The Dreamcloud Mattress

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
