Construction Used Dreamcloud Mattress
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Used Dreamcloud Mattress
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three other people to present their view as well. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Rather than just describing the feel of this mattress to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to know what it will feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Used Dreamcloud Mattress
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
While buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Used Dreamcloud Mattress
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I’m especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
