As a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets many of our criteria for what a excellent bed must provide. With eight exceptional layers of comfort and support, the DreamCloud uses all of the proper materials in its construction. Up Dreamcloud
From the tufted cashmere cover that gives great airflow, to the gel memory foam in the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to promote a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mixture of memory foam and latex layers, meaning this bed contains better quality relaxation materials than most other hybrid mattresses.

Even though it uses multiple memory foam layers, there is not any hug or significant shaping to the mattress. If you are searching to sink into a mattress, then proceed from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support center keeps you aligned all night long, especially for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Up Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Up Dreamcloud

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to note that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other people to present their view too. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Up Dreamcloud

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new bed, most men and women want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Up Dreamcloud

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I’m especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
