Construction Tuft And Needle vs Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Tuft And Needle vs Dreamcloud

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

Now I want to note that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the general firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three other people to present their opinion too. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this bed is really firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply explaining the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to find out what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Tuft And Needle vs Dreamcloud

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new bed, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Tuft And Needle vs Dreamcloud

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
