Construction The Cabin Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. The Cabin Dreamcloud

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I want to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to present their view as well. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this mattress is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. The Cabin Dreamcloud

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. The Cabin Dreamcloud

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I’m especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
