Construction Sleep Number vs Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Sleep Number vs Dreamcloud

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three other people to present their opinion too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply describing the feel of this mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Sleep Number vs Dreamcloud

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Sleep Number vs Dreamcloud

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
