As a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets a number of our criteria for what a quality bed must provide. With 8 exceptional layers of support and comfort, the DreamCloud uses all of the proper materials in its construction. Serta vs Dreamcloud
From the tufted cashmere cover that gives great airflow, to the gel memory foam at the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud is designed to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Resting below are a mix of polyurethane foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress contains better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid mattresses.

Even though it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there’s not any hug or significant shaping to the bed. If you are looking to sink into a mattress, move on from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, especially so for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Serta vs Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Serta vs Dreamcloud

construction

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of the three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

Now I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the general firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three additional people to give their opinion as well. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.

firmness test

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this bed is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just describing the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Serta vs Dreamcloud

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new bed, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Serta vs Dreamcloud

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
