Construction Saatva vs Dreamcloud Reviews

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Saatva vs Dreamcloud Reviews

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

At this point I want to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I invited three additional people to give their opinion as well. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply describing the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my back, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Saatva vs Dreamcloud Reviews

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Saatva vs Dreamcloud Reviews

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
