Construction Purple Mattress vs Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Purple Mattress vs Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three additional individuals to give their opinion too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this mattress is pretty firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Purple Mattress vs Dreamcloud
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.
When purchasing a new bed, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Purple Mattress vs Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
