As a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud fulfills many of our criteria for what a excellent mattress should have. With 8 unique layers of support and comfort, the DreamCloud uses all of the right materials in its construction. Peter Thomas Roth Dreamcloud Review
From the tufted cashmere cover that gives good airflow, to the gel memory foam at the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mixture of memory foam and latex layers, meaning this bed includes better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid mattresses.

Even though it uses multiple memory foam layers, there’s not any hug or significant contouring to the bed. If you are searching to sink into a mattress, then move on from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, especially so for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Peter Thomas Roth Dreamcloud Review

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Peter Thomas Roth Dreamcloud Review

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I’d like to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three other people to present their opinion too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this bed is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of this mattress to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Peter Thomas Roth Dreamcloud Review

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new bed, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Peter Thomas Roth Dreamcloud Review

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
