Construction Oceania vs Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Oceania vs Dreamcloud

construction

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of these three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional people to give their view too. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.

firmness test

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is really firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just describing the feel of the mattress for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Oceania vs Dreamcloud

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new bed, most people wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Oceania vs Dreamcloud

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I am particularly interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
