From the tufted cashmere cover that gives great airflow, to the gel memory foam at the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mixture of memory foam and latex layers, meaning this bed includes better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid mattresses.

Despite the fact that it uses multiple memory foam layers, there is no hug or significant contouring to the mattress. If you are looking to sink into a mattress, then move on from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support center keeps you aligned all night long, especially for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Oceana vs Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Oceana vs Dreamcloud

construction

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the general firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three additional individuals to give their view too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.

firmness test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Oceana vs Dreamcloud

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Oceana vs Dreamcloud

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
