From the tufted cashmere cover that gives great airflow, to the gel memory foam at the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to promote a cooler night’s sleep. Resting below are a mixture of memory foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress includes better quality relaxation materials than most other hybrid mattresses.

Even though it uses multiple memory foam layers, there is no hug or significant contouring to the bed. If you are searching to sink into a mattress, then proceed from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support center keeps you aligned all night long, especially so for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Nest Bedding Alexander Hybrid vs Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Nest Bedding Alexander Hybrid vs Dreamcloud

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

At this point I want to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three additional people to present their view as well. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you can see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Nest Bedding Alexander Hybrid vs Dreamcloud

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Nest Bedding Alexander Hybrid vs Dreamcloud

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will provide.

I’m especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
