Construction Nectar vs Lull vs Dreamcloud Mattrass

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Nectar vs Lull vs Dreamcloud Mattrass

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I invited three additional people to present their opinion too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is really firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply describing the feel of the mattress for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it will feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Nectar vs Lull vs Dreamcloud Mattrass

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new bed, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Nectar vs Lull vs Dreamcloud Mattrass

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am particularly interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
