Construction Nectar vs Casper vs Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Nectar vs Casper vs Dreamcloud

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

Now I want to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three other individuals to give their view too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply explaining the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Nectar vs Casper vs Dreamcloud

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Nectar vs Casper vs Dreamcloud

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
