Construction Nectar Mattress vs Dreamcloud Mattress

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Nectar Mattress vs Dreamcloud Mattress

construction

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to present their view as well. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

firmness test

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is really firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just describing the feel of the mattress to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Nectar Mattress vs Dreamcloud Mattress

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Nectar Mattress vs Dreamcloud Mattress

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will give you.

I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
