Construction Nectar Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Nectar Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three additional people to give their view too. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than just explaining the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Nectar Dreamcloud
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
When purchasing a new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Nectar Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
