Construction Nap Time Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Nap Time Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
At this point I want to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three other individuals to give their opinion too. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than just describing the feel of this mattress for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.
If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to know what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Nap Time Dreamcloud
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.
When purchasing a new bed, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Nap Time Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you’re going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
