Construction Mattress Like Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Mattress Like Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of these three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I want to note that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I invited three additional people to give their view too. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Rather than simply explaining the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Mattress Like Dreamcloud
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
While buying a new mattress, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Mattress Like Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
