Construction Mattress Buying Guide Saatva vs Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Mattress Buying Guide Saatva vs Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to present their opinion as well. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than just explaining the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.
If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to know what it will feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Mattress Buying Guide Saatva vs Dreamcloud
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.
While buying a new bed, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Mattress Buying Guide Saatva vs Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will provide.
I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
