Because it’s a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud fulfills many of our standards for what a quality mattress should have. With eight unique layers of support and comfort, the DreamCloud utilizes all the right materials in its construction. Level Sleep vs Dreamcloud
From the tufted cashmere cover that gives good airflow, to the gel memory foam at the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud is designed to promote a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mix of polyurethane foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress contains better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid beds.

Even though it uses multiple memory foam layers, there’s not any hug or significant contouring to the mattress. If you are looking to sink into a mattress, then proceed from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, particularly for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Level Sleep vs Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Level Sleep vs Dreamcloud

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

At this point I want to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three additional people to present their opinion as well. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just describing the feel of the mattress to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my back, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Level Sleep vs Dreamcloud

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Level Sleep vs Dreamcloud

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I’m particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
