As a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets a number of our criteria for what a excellent bed should provide. With 8 exceptional layers of comfort and support, the DreamCloud utilizes all the proper materials in its construction. Kingsdown vs Dreamcloud Mattress
From the tufted cashmere cover that gives good airflow, to the gel memory foam in the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mixture of polyurethane foam and latex layers, meaning this bed includes better quality relaxation materials than most other hybrid beds.

Despite the fact that it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there is no hug or significant contouring to the mattress. If you are looking to sink into a mattress, proceed from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, especially so for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Kingsdown vs Dreamcloud Mattress

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Kingsdown vs Dreamcloud Mattress

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

Now I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three other individuals to present their view too. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply describing the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my back, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Kingsdown vs Dreamcloud Mattress

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of men and women want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Kingsdown vs Dreamcloud Mattress

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will give you.

I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
