Construction Is The Dreamcloud Mattress Made In America

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Is The Dreamcloud Mattress Made In America

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

Now I want to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three other people to present their view as well. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply explaining the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my back, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Is The Dreamcloud Mattress Made In America

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new bed, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Is The Dreamcloud Mattress Made In America

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
