Construction Is The Dreamcloud Good For Side Sleepers
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Is The Dreamcloud Good For Side Sleepers
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
At this point I want to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three additional individuals to present their opinion too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Rather than just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Is The Dreamcloud Good For Side Sleepers
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.
When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of men and women want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Is The Dreamcloud Good For Side Sleepers
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will provide.
I’m especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
