As a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud fulfills many of our standards for what a excellent mattress must have. With eight unique layers of support and comfort, the DreamCloud utilizes all of the right materials in its construction. Idle Mattress vs Dreamcloud
From the tufted cashmere cover that gives good airflow, to the gel memory foam in the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to promote a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mixture of polyurethane foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress includes better quality relaxation materials than most other hybrid beds.

Even though it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there’s no hug or significant shaping to the bed. If you are searching to sink into a mattress, proceed from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, especially so for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Idle Mattress vs Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Idle Mattress vs Dreamcloud

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

Now I want to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the general firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other people to present their view too. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you can see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of this mattress for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to find out what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Idle Mattress vs Dreamcloud

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new bed, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Idle Mattress vs Dreamcloud

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
