Construction How To Put On The Mattess Cover Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. How To Put On The Mattess Cover Dreamcloud

construction

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of these three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I want to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the general firmness level of this mattress, I invited three additional individuals to present their opinion as well. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.

firmness test

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply describing the feel of the mattress to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress to another. How To Put On The Mattess Cover Dreamcloud

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. How To Put On The Mattess Cover Dreamcloud

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
