Construction How Do You Return A Dreamcloud Mattress
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. How Do You Return A Dreamcloud Mattress
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
Now I want to note that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three additional people to give their view too. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Rather than simply explaining the feel of this mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress to another. How Do You Return A Dreamcloud Mattress
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.
While buying a new bed, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. How Do You Return A Dreamcloud Mattress
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
