Construction Helix vs Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Helix vs Dreamcloud

construction

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional people to present their view as well. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.

firmness test

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is really firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just explaining the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Helix vs Dreamcloud

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Helix vs Dreamcloud

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I’m particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
