Because it’s a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud fulfills many of our criteria for what a excellent mattress must have. With eight exceptional layers of comfort and support, the DreamCloud utilizes all the right materials in its construction. Franklin Hatchett Dreamcloud
From the tufted cashmere cover that gives great airflow, to the gel memory foam in the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to promote a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mixture of polyurethane foam and latex layers, meaning this bed includes better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid mattresses.
Even though it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there’s no hug or significant shaping to the mattress. If you’re looking to sink into a mattress, then move on from the DreamCloud.
A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, particularly so for all you back sleepers on the market.

Construction Franklin Hatchett Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Franklin Hatchett Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three other individuals to give their opinion as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than just explaining the feel of this mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Franklin Hatchett Dreamcloud
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.
While buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Franklin Hatchett Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I’m particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
