Even though it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there’s no hug or significant shaping to the bed. If you are looking to sink into a mattress, then move on from the DreamCloud.

Construction Foundation For Dreamcloud Mattress

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Foundation For Dreamcloud Mattress

construction

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

Now I want to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional individuals to present their view too. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.

firmness test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to know what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Foundation For Dreamcloud Mattress

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Foundation For Dreamcloud Mattress

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
