Because it’s a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets a number of our standards for what a quality bed must have. With eight unique layers of comfort and support, the DreamCloud utilizes all the proper materials in its construction. Dreamcloud With Z’s
From the tufted cashmere cover that provides good airflow, to the gel memory foam at the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Resting below are a mixture of polyurethane foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress includes better quality relaxation materials than most other hybrid beds.

Even though it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there is no hug or significant contouring to the mattress. If you’re looking to sink into a mattress, then move on from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support center keeps you aligned all night long, particularly so for all you back sleepers on the market.

Construction Dreamcloud With Z’s

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud With Z’s

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

At this point I want to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the general firmness level of this mattress, I invited three additional individuals to give their view too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is really firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud With Z’s

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud With Z’s

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will provide.

I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
