Construction Dreamcloud Watch
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Watch
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to note that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other people to present their opinion as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than simply explaining the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Watch
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.
While purchasing a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Watch
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
