Construction Dreamcloud Vx Saatva Mattress
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Vx Saatva Mattress
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of these three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to note that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to present their opinion too. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is pretty firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
As opposed to just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud Vx Saatva Mattress
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
When buying a new bed, most people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Vx Saatva Mattress
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I’m especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
